Kevin Cummins is one of the world’s most respected music and portrait photographers. He has enjoyed a celebrated career, photographing iconic artists such as David Bowie, Oasis and The Stone Roses. After studying photography in Salford, Kevin embarked on a career that would place him at the forefront of music photography. The emerging punk scene in Manchester dominated his early work and he became one of the main documentary photographers of the era.
When Cummins started working with Manchester’s prestigious Royal Exchange Theatre, he was in demand by other major theatre companies. Most notably, The Royal Opera House, The Royal Northern Ballet, The Liverpool Playhouse and The Oxford Playhouse. Kevin was instrumental in establishing City Life, Manchester’s ‘what’s on’ guide and was a founding contributor to The Face.
Since moving to London in 1987, Kevin has contributed towards many major UK publications. These include The Times, The Observer, The Guardian, Esquire, Maxim, Elle, Vogue, Mojo, FourFourTwo, Sleaze Nation and The Big Issue. He spent 10 years as the chief photographer for NME – the world’s biggest selling rock weekly. In that same year, he was short-listed for the Fox Talbot award. One of the premier photographic honours.
Cummins has received much critical acclaim throughout his career. His work graces many record sleeves and book jackets, and he regularly contributes to publications worldwide. In 1999 The National Portrait Gallery chose three of Kevin’s photographs for their Icon’s of Pop exhibition. In 2002, Kevin was a major contributing photographer to Rock X-Posed, a Kodak sponsored US touring exhibition of the best Rock ‘n’ Roll photos in the world. The pictures are now permanently held in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio.
Most recently, Kevin Cummins has published “While We Were Getting High: Britpop and the 90s”. A book comprising of many unseen images of musical icons from the late 20th century. Nostalgic and anarchic, the images in this book explore the rise and fall of Cool Britannia and all that came with it. While We Were Getting High is a seminal portrait of a decade like no other.
